Heritage in Vogue: Black in Fashion

Heritage in Vogue: Black in Fashion celebrates Black History Month, showcasing the profound impact of Black designers, models, and fashion professionals on American style. Hosted by the YMCA of South Florida, in collaboration with Empire Fashion Firm and the South Florida Fashion Academy (SF/FA), this special event will take place at the Victory Black Box Theatre (1409 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311) on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

SF/FA’s middle and high school fashion design students will present original collections inspired by legendary Black fashion icons such as Virgil Abloh, Ann Lowe, and Andre Leon Talley. Taj McGill, founder and director of SF/FA, emphasizes that this event is a tribute to Black pioneers who have shaped the industry.

Following the fashion show, guests will experience a screening of “The Gospel According to André,” a documentary that explores the life and career of André Leon Talley, from his Southern upbringing to his influential role as Vogue’s Editor-at-Large. This powerful film highlights his groundbreaking contributions to fashion journalism and culture.

A Black in Fashion Panel, featuring Kamaria McCall, CEO of Empire Fashion Firm, Taj McGill, and emerging student designers, will discuss the evolving landscape of fashion and the lasting influence of Black designers. The evening will conclude with a Black Designer Pop-Up Shop, offering attendees a chance to shop exclusive collections from local Black designers and SF/FA students.
